Vega Baja MMA was originally formed as Club De Estilo Libre Ju-Jutsu (Freestyle Ju-Jutsu Club) in Jacarilla, Alicante, Spain. Started by Benjamin Williams a Black Belt in Atemi Ju-Jitsu a martial art that was developed as a self defense style of Jujutsu. First developed at the Ju-Jitsu Club Francais in Paris by Bernard Pariset where he started to teach a Judo-Jiu-Jitsu mixed style while training there for his professional Judo career. 

The Ju-Jitsu Club Francais welcomed striking arts into its dojo such as Karate and Savate or Boxe Francaise and these arts we quickly incorporated into there system which influenced the development of Atemi Ju-Jitsu as an effective hybrid Martial Art.

When Benjamin left France to move to Spain he wanted to continue the development of the martial arts he had learned. After disapproval from the Atemi Ju-Jitsu community he was linked with about his ideas of cross training in other forms of Martial Arts and combat sports feeling being under the Atemi Ju-Jitsu umbrella limited the development of what he was trying to achieve, Benjamin opened up his own training facility Club De Estilo Libre Ju-Jutsu (Freestyle Ju-Jutsu Club).

One of the first changes Benjamin made was to stop training in a traditional Jujutsugi (Uniform) feeling it was outdated for most training situations but still using it for some self defence training as the jacket was good for replicating a winter coat. He also adding striking and grappling techniques to his training that he had learned from other disciplines such as Muay Thai, Catch Wrestling, Kakuto Karate and Russian Sambo. Another strong ethos was the practise of live sparring, doing away with demonstrations of techniques with compliant partners as often seen in traditional Martial Arts.   

In 2014 it was decided to change the club's name to Vega Baja MMA as the sport of MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) was becoming the number one combat sport and the only purpose of training was to train techniques that were relevant to today's competition and self defence scenarios. Vega Baja MMA is a Combat Submission Wrestling affiliate and we follow the curriculum set out by Sensei Erik Paulson.
